In a significant political development, Wiper Democratic Movement party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has publicly called for Raila Odinga to step down as the leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party.
This move comes after Raila's recent deal with President William Ruto, which has raised questions about his continued role in the opposition.
During a press briefing in Embu on Sunday, August 18, 2024, Kalonzo made his position clear, stating that Raila’s ongoing leadership of the opposition is no longer viable due to the recent political realignments.
"We wish Raila Odinga well in his quest to become the African Union Commission Chair, but it is untenable that he remains the opposition coalition's leader after some members of his party joined the government," Kalonzo declared.
Kalonzo's remarks have further exposed the growing cracks within the Azimio la Umoja Coalition. As a prominent figure within the coalition, Kalonzo's call for Raila to relinquish his leadership role is indicative of deepening divisions.
These rifts are primarily fueled by the perceived shift in Raila’s political allegiance following his engagement with President Ruto’s administration.
Kalonzo also highlighted the implications of Raila's new alignment for the opposition's structure within parliament.
He emphasized that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party, which Raila leads, cannot continue to hold the minority leadership in the National Assembly while simultaneously being part of the government.
Kalonzo announced that the Azimio la Umoja governing council would convene on Monday, August 19, 2024, to decide on new minority leadership in parliament.
"The coalition's governing council will be meeting tomorrow to determine who will be the official opposition leader in Parliament as members of the ODM party cannot be in Government and hold the position at the same time," Kalonzo stated.
The ongoing tensions within the Azimio la Umoja Coalition were further exacerbated by comments from Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni.
Kioni publicly disputed Raila's claims that former President Uhuru Kenyatta had encouraged him to engage with Ruto and join the broad-based government.
According to Kioni, Uhuru’s position remains that he cannot be involved in a government that has allegedly caused significant disruption in the country.
Kioni went on to criticize Raila for involving Uhuru's name in his decision to cooperate with Ruto, asserting that Raila's statements were inaccurate and did not reflect the former president’s true stance.
He referenced a letter from Uhuru, dated July 25, 2024, in which the former president urged national leaders to listen to the concerns raised by Kenyans, rather than focusing on political maneuvering.
As the Azimio la Umoja Coalition faces internal strife, the upcoming governing council meeting is expected to be a pivotal moment in determining the future leadership of the opposition in Kenya.
With Kalonzo Musyoka now positioning himself as a potential successor to Raila Odinga, the political landscape within the coalition is set to undergo significant changes.
Raila’s deal with President Ruto has not only reshaped the dynamics within Azimio but has also prompted serious questions about the coalition's role as the official opposition.
