Gang's Bold Heist: CCTV Captures Ksh1.7 Million Theft from Nairobi Businessman
A daring robbery along Nairobi’s Mombasa Road has left a businessman reeling after a sophisticated gang stole Ksh1.7 million in a meticulously planned heist.
The incident, which took place on August 1, has heightened security concerns and left investigators scrambling for leads.
The businessman, who has chosen to remain anonymous for safety reasons, had withdrawn the significant sum from a bank on Mombasa Road.
Unbeknownst to him, a gang had been trailing him from the bank and followed his every move with alarming precision.
As he arrived at his apartment complex in Syokimau, the gang struck. They managed to break into his car, where the cash had been stored in the boot.
The audacious thieves had trailed him for nearly five kilometers, waiting for the perfect moment to execute their plan.
Remarkably, they even infiltrated the apartment premises, creating a diversion while their accomplices looted the vehicle.
Security footage from both the bank and the apartment complex has provided crucial insights into the operation. The CCTV footage shows a suspect loitering in the bank’s queue, initially appearing innocuous but later identified as part of the criminal crew.
This individual left the bank just as the businessman was being served, signaling the start of a coordinated surveillance operation.
The gang's meticulous planning was evident. They observed the businessman as he placed the cash in his car’s boot and then followed him to his apartment.
Once there, they waited for him to enter before breaking into the vehicle. The robbery was executed without violence, and the theft was discovered only minutes later when the businessman returned to his car.
Athi River’s head of DCI, Wesley Kiprotich, reported that investigators are following promising leads. However, the gang's use of fake number plates has complicated the investigation. Police have visited both the crime scene and the bank for further examination.
This high-profile robbery has raised alarms about a disturbing trend: criminals targeting bank customers who withdraw large amounts of cash.
The police have issued warnings about the risks associated with carrying significant sums and advised the public to remain vigilant. Some thieves are known to pose as customers within banks to identify potential targets, which they then follow and rob.
The case highlights the sophistication of modern criminal networks. The use of different vehicles and high-level coordination suggests that these gangs are well-organized and potentially connected to larger criminal networks.
There is speculation that some suspects could be affiliated with law enforcement or bank staff, adding another layer of complexity to the investigation.
