In Nairobi, a grieving mother is desperately searching for her son, who disappeared during the recent anti-Finance Bill protests.
Alice Wambui's son, Peter Macharia, went missing on June 25, 2024, during the “Occupy Parliament” demonstrations, which have been marked by unrest and clashes.
Wambui had urged her son to avoid the central business district on the day of the protests, warning him of the potential dangers.
Despite her advice, Macharia left the house, determined to participate in the demonstrations. Tragically, he was caught in the violence and sustained a gunshot wound.
According to Wambui, Macharia was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital by the Kenya Red Cross after being injured.
When she arrived at the hospital, she was told that her son had been treated and discharged earlier that same day.
The medical staff explained that the hospital was overwhelmed with casualties and that Macharia's injuries were not severe enough to warrant keeping him overnight.
Heartbroken and confused, Wambui questioned why her son was discharged so late at night.
She was told that there were many injured individuals and that Macharia's condition was classified as minor.
Despite the reassurances, the situation grew more distressing as Wambui was unable to find any trace of her son.
In the days following his discharge, Wambui visited various hospitals and mortuaries across Nairobi, including Mbagathi Hospital and the City Mortuary, in a desperate attempt to locate Macharia.
Her searches have been in vain, leaving her in a state of anguish and despair. The lack of any concrete leads has further compounded her grief, and she has been unable to even find solace in her daily routine.
Wambui has also sought assistance from local police stations, but her efforts to report her son's disappearance have not yielded any results.
The frustration of navigating a bureaucracy that seems unresponsive to her plight has added to her emotional turmoil.
In a heart-wrenching plea, Wambui is now calling on the government and relevant authorities to help her in finding her son and to provide some closure to this painful ordeal.
The protests, which began as a response to the proposed Finance Bill, have seen significant unrest, resulting in injuries and disruptions across the city.
The chaotic nature of the demonstrations and the overwhelmed state of medical facilities have made it challenging for individuals like Wambui to get timely assistance.
As the days go by, Wambui’s hope of reuniting with her son remains tenuous. The anguish of not knowing his whereabouts and the fear for his safety weigh heavily on her.
