Two men were recently arraigned at the Machakos Law Courts on charges of stealing mobile phones from patients at Machakos Level 5 Hospital.
The suspects, identified as Peter Mutavi Mutua and Francis Musembi Mumo, were apprehended following a series of thefts that have raised concerns about the safety and security of patients and their belongings in public healthcare facilities.
The thefts took place within the hospital premises, where patients often leave their belongings unattended while receiving treatment.
According to reports, the suspects were caught after hospital security reviewed CCTV footage that showed Mutua entering the hospital around 8 a.m. and leaving an hour later.
During his time inside the facility, Mutua allegedly stole an Infinix phone valued at Ksh. 25,000 from Patricia Kasyoka, a patient who was waiting in the radiology department.
After the theft was reported, hospital security and local police reviewed the CCTV footage and were able to identify Mutua as the suspect.
Following his arrest, Mutua reportedly led authorities to Mumo, who was found in possession of the stolen phone. Additionally, Mutua was also discovered to have another stolen phone, worth Ksh. 12,000, belonging to another patient named Magdalene Mueni.
Both suspects appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate James Ombura on August 29, 2024, where they pleaded not guilty to the charges of theft.
The magistrate ordered that the suspects be held at the Machakos GK Prison pending their next court appearance, which is scheduled for Friday. During this upcoming session, the court will determine whether the suspects are eligible for bond or bail.
The defendants' plea of not guilty has prompted the court to consider additional evidence, including CCTV footage and witness testimonies from hospital staff and patients.
The case has attracted significant attention, highlighting the need for increased security measures in public hospitals.
The incidents at Machakos Level 5 Hospital have sparked concerns among both hospital staff and patients. Many worry that public healthcare facilities, which are supposed to be safe havens for healing, have become targets for criminals looking to exploit vulnerable individuals.
The hospital’s management has acknowledged these concerns and has promised to enhance security measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
Hospital administrators have also urged patients and visitors to remain vigilant and take precautions when bringing valuable items into the hospital.
The management is exploring several security upgrades, including the installation of more CCTV cameras, hiring additional security personnel, and possibly introducing secure lockers for patients to store their personal belongings while receiving treatment.
